In the fourth part of the story about Dr. Sophie Schöner and Dr. Wu, the two work together again in their old clinic after their "joint practice" project ended sooner than expected. Dr. Wu is standing in for the seriously ill clinic director Professor Fritz, which opens up unimagined career opportunities for him, but he is now also under constant pressure and extreme tension. On top of this, Sophie is pregnant, which further exacerbates the strained relationship between the two. In order to provide a little compensation for the completely overworked staff, Hans feverishly tries to make financial savings that he could credit to his employees as a pay rise. Maria is a record saleswoman by profession. She is lucky to have a job, because the year is 1930 and a major economic crisis has hit the world, accompanied by an army of unemployed people, especially in Germany. Maria is aware of her good fortune; in order to secure it, she has to do without many things. What business owner would employ an unmarried woman with a child in times like these? When Maria became pregnant, she, like many other women, had to become "active" and do something about this "misfortune". So she seeks "help" from a female doctor, trusting in her youth and hoping for better times when family happiness could come true for her.

Two people meet again by chance after years of separation: Monika and Winfried. Monika used to work as a sales clerk, now she works as a kindergarten teacher. She has a son by Winfried, but he knows nothing about it. Winfried graduated from university and went on to become a successful journalist. They were both very happy to see each other again and spend a nice day together. But despite all the things they have to tell each other, one thing remains central: why did they break up back then and can they make a new start together? Monika remembers the good times she had with Winfried years ago. Back then, Winfried was superior to her and had leased success. Today he is struggling with many problems in his job and it seems that Monika has "overtaken" him in many respects. But Winfried, currently an embittered man, is given a chance in the movie's story to regain human sovereignty. And perhaps one day he could even be a good father to his son, of whose existence he was previously unaware.

The film tells the story of the smelter brigade of a steel mill whose members are connected by a strong comradeship. Among the workers are, for instance, young Rolf, whom everybody just calls "Lachtaube" and who always comes through for his co-workers, or the likable Hubert, who works as a simple smelter again after being dismissed as the head of the steel mill. Then, there is also the stubborn Manfred, who should have become a brigadier long ago because of his experience and his competence, but this privilege is refused to him because Manfred is not a party member. Ironically, it is Manfred who hears by accident about the plans of the mill to close down the old Martin furnaces – and to lay off the smelters. When the other men learn about the plans they enter the barricades for their jobs and force the plant′s management to face the workers′ demands and criticism.
