The lives of 7 friends in a small Czech town from 1945 to some time after 1958.

Martin, a poor student, volunteers to go on a quest to find a cure for the princess Adriana, who is stricken with a strange illness. Unknown to Martin or anyone else, the princess is actually under the spell of the powerful magician Andlobrandini, who is preparing a rejuvenating elixir made from the blood of nine men's hearts.

Princess Terezka was a girl like a pod until the moment when Mrs. Madam took over her upbringing. The princess even cries from her etiquette. Famous doctors and their potions do not help. However, when Terezka is secretly taken from the castle by her beloved Tonek to her parents in a country cottage, her illness is over. The king promises that whoever finds Terezka and brings her back to the castle will get her hand in marriage and half the kingdom to go with it.

The bank officer Bedrich Hroch is sent by the bank director to the zoo, which asked an allocation of one and half kg of gold for a gold tooth for a hippo. During the check up of the hippo's teeth Bedrich is swallowed by the hippo. The man does not die in the hippo's guts and he chats quite happily with his frightened wife Dása. Journalist Pip Karen, his friend is also present to the dialogue and he has immediately an idea how to use this special situation. He tells to the new minister Borovec and his opponent professor Fibinger that there is a hippo in the zoo which can speak. He also tells them how to use this situation for a political propaganda.

The cheerful farce tells the story of the charming wife of an Andalusian shoemaker, a charming beauty who attracts the eyes of a crowd of cavaliers. The beautiful woman is more than thirty years younger than her husband, but she is quarrelsome, argumentative and, above all, dissatisfied. Despite this, she remains faithful to her good-natured husband, many years older. However, he mainly desires peace, and, carried away by gossip, one day leaves his wife. He returns as a principal with a puppet theater to find that his wife has remained faithful to him, both spouses are convinced that they were wrong and return to each other...
