There, in the container, he meets his teenage self, who is remembering his childhood experience as a refugee living in a segregated camp in Hong Kong. The alleyways of Ho Chi Minh City are narrow and labyrinthine, with walls full of splatters and flyers advertising all kinds of services. Through Đỗ Văn Hoàng’s lens, they become a stage whereby the surrealist drama of idleness unfolds. In between moments of profound uncertainty and darkness are playful dialogues grounded in the experience of traversing the city. Probationary speaks of the existential issue of livelihood from within, without pretense.

A lovesick man wishes to become a tree. He seeks water. He seeks somewhere to stand. He finds another identity of himself.

Carrying a slow-moving rhythm like the kinetic sculpture appearing on screen, a miniature mountain drifting through the night, the film composes an intangible movement of fragments of life and art. This work was made for the 20th anniversary of Nhà Sàn, in a period when Nhà Sàn Collective were returning to their home. An atmosphere, a sense of space, aesthetics, and the distinctive portrait of an intergenerational art community in Hanoi. A tribute to the home of a couple, Mrs. Lương and Mr. Mạnh Đức, Nhà Sàn's birthplace.
