Justiina pushes Pekka and Pätkä to take painting lessons after realizing that art can be a way to earn a living. With the help of the yard children, a painting is created that wins first prize at a contemporary art exhibition. In the meantime, the men, along with their assistant Miss Kaihokielo, have been charged with art theft. After the misunderstanding is cleared up, the Puupääs use the art prize money to convert the house's bomb shelter into a children's clubroom.

A radio reporter from Helsinki arrives in the village of Kankkula just before Midsummer to conduct interviews. The old sheriff demands that his nephew Lauri, who serves as the village policeman, continue the generations-old tradition of arresting the old master of Tippavaara, whom the sheriff believes to be brewing moonshine. A film centered around a popular Finnish song book. Young lovers Pirkko and Pekka break off their engagement at the end of an evening spent at a dance restaurant. At home, Pirkko finds a songbook in her room, whose songs turn into musical scenes. The night watchman carries the songbook with him, and it ends up, via a sad prostitute, a police officer, and a night shelter resident, with Pekka, who is waiting for Pirkko's forgiveness and comes to pick up his fiancée.
