Gerhard Gundermann

This historically relevant documentation about the Lusatian original Gerhard "Gundi" Gundermann, who was received ambivalently at his time, is a truthful, unfalsified contemporary document, both about the folk song singer and excavator driver himself, as well as about the realities of the time within still existing GDR. His actual quality and significance to this day is evident in the timelessness of his profound songs and lyrics, also written for other artists, in their universality and the poetic power of various interpretations.

The Lusatian mining district and the former "socialist residential town" of Hoyerswerda form the backdrop for the biography of Gerhard Gundermann, rock poet, digger driver and "voice of the East". Global issues are concentrated in the region and in his work like in a burning mirror: home and industry, the end of work, utopia and individual responsibility.

A film essay documenting the devastation of the Lausitz region. The Sorb writer Jurij Koch describes the destruction wreaked as a component in an act of ethnocide: "The end of a language; even if the step is appantantly an economic necessity in terms of furhtering the region, it signifies impoverishment, the excavation of an ethnic habitat - a restriction of human richness."
