Arthur Preston Hankins

A young woman tries to find out the reason behind why all of her female ancestors have been killed before they reach their 21st birthday.

Old Morgan, an eccentric millionaire in a western city, has a dissipated young son. He has also a very sweet adopted daughter, Edwina. One day the son is waylaid near the railroad yards, stripped of a big "roll" and thrown unconscious into a box car.

Wilbur Stone is falsely accused of a crime, convicted on circumstantial evidence and "railroaded" to the penitentiary. As an odd coincidence. Frank Fink, a hardened degenerate, is sent up at the same time and he becomes a prison parasite on Stone. Both men are released about the same time.

Two boys, Dan Woods, son of a poor widow, and Bert Ainslie, the scion of a rich one, are introduced in college. The scene opens at the tennis court on the college campus, then comes the girl, Nellie Wilson, beloved of both, but favoring the poor youth, Dan.

The story of David Scanlon - a former gunfighter turned farmer, who sells the family homestead in favor of adventure in the California gold fields.
