Between Shadow and Light is a documentary about the thought, style and works of "Farah Osuli", a contemporary Iranian painter. He seeks to find a meaningful form to express his thoughts and ideas in his works and has found this form in the rich tradition and subtle beauty of Iranian paintings, architecture and decorative arts.

In the face of an impending catastrophe, a family holes up in their house. The mother, Anna, has dedicated her life to housework and the children. She tries to create a warm home for her family in the cramped and dark isolation. But the threat draws inexorably closer. When supplies run out and her husband sets out to get supplies, Anna's only support falls away.

Iman has built his life in Berlin around absence. From his family, from Iran, from being known. He drifts through the city, chasing closeness and solitude. Day in, night out, he works as a caregiver for an old man and at a truck wash. He fills the silence with invented stories and a man he meets for sex at night in a park. On his endless paths through the city, fragments from the lives of other passersby drift alongside him. When his cousin Maneli visits from Tehran, what he left behind quietly returns.
