When her family comes in search of her, Margit vows to only return with Karl by her side.

The scene is set in Kashmir, in the northernmost part of India, where the great Indus River meanders. Kamala, the granddaughter of Maharaja Chandra Kumar, the powerful viceroy of Benares, is promised to become the chief lady-in-waiting of the daughter of Goyar, the Grand Duke of Delhi. She falls in love with Cavalry Captain Rachman, who hails from a farmer’s household. Her amour with the captain, however, is strongly opposed to by her grandfather, grandmother, and her aunts, on the grounds that the young lovers are too vastly separated in their respective social position.

In 1961, young Hermann goes to the British hospital to get medicine for his mother. Because of this, he ends up on the wrong side when the Berlin Wall goes up and is seperated from his mother. He is adopted by a very loving couple and grows up to become a world-famous composer. As the show opens, it is 1988, and he performs his newest piece, called "A Map Without Borders" in New York. Afterwards, he tells the tale of how he was seperated from his mother to the press. He hopes someday to be able to cross into East Berlin and find his mother again.

Tatiana is married to Leonard, a former American consulate worker in Russia during the cold war. Tatiana has returned to Russia now, ten years later...

Peter is a young actor without roots. He returns to Minneapolis, where his friend Clive is struggling to find someone to fill a request from the city hall. They need an actor to take the lead role in the city's production.
