Although the chief field judge rules the man's death an accident, Krafft reconstructs the events and proves that it was a case of murder. Ensign Hochbauer, who was in the party's favor, is said to have deliberately shortened the fuse during the explosive exercise, as a result of which the supervising officer was unable to get to safety in time.

Towards the end, the story shifts gears when the Benelux Frontier Agreement eliminates all government regulations. The film's screenplay is by Charles Spaak, himself the descendant of a Belgian political family, and thus well-versed in bureaucracy and red tape.

When the driver then wants to get a closer look at the "crazy" dog, the following inscription can be read on his collar: "My name is Stork, owned by Lu Tiemann, Regentenstrasse 17." Many well-to-do gentlemen fall for this approach, such as a portly consul or a factory owner and privy councillor, next to whom "Stork" brazenly positions himself on the passenger seat.
