Literature teacher Tatyana Ivaschenko finds a strange story describing a murder in her late father's papers. The story is clearly amateurish, but it reminds Tatyana of a scene from Tolstoy's "The Kreutzer Sonata." Tatyana turns to her father's colleagues, who worked for the Investigative Committee, of all places.

It happened in the sixties, during the political thaw in the Soviet Union... but our story unfolds in the coldest terrain of the country. It was an unexplored and unbeaten terrain of boundless ice-field and forbidding rocks. This was the proper place for real men and real romantics. Our story is about the geologists prospecting gold in the Extreme North.

The film’s plot is based on a true story about a 10-year-old boy from a village, Ilya, whose father is killed. The criminal remains unpunished. Nobody around this situation is particularly worried, except the child, who arranges a real hunt for the murderer.
