Kim Dong-hyun

Former Minister of National Security, Park Jin-wook, is kidnapped from the US by South Korean agents because he was about to reveal secrets concerning the rise of the military dictatorship of the 1980's.

Ji-woong is a loser who can't find a job so he lies to his mother for money, but one day she abruptly cuts him off and he becomes homeless. That same day, salvation arrives in the form of Hong-sil who's extremely stingy. Her hobby is visiting the bank to make savings deposits, and her specialty is selling empty glass bottles and old newspapers for cash.

While on his way to the local temple to ring an ancient bell which will grant his dying mother safe passage to the afterlife, Jong-du's father is killed by a Japanese soldier who was looting the temple. Out of respect for his father and grandmother and to help their spirits rest in peace, Jong-du tries to join the temple and cast a new bell to replace the one that was stolen however his obsessive behavior gets him kicked out of the temple. He marries Suk-hie who helps him scrounge for copper so he can make a new bell on his own.

Dr Young-bin treats Mi-ae for alcohol poisoning and a drug overdose. After her recovery, they find themselves meeting often and realize that they have something in common--drinking. Mi-ae tries to get away from her abusive, unemployed lover to be with Young-bin, but when she succeeds she becomes miserable and her drug addiction worsens.

Deok-bo intends to fight his Eun-swi for the love of Bon-hie, but he is impressed by his rival's manly strength upon meeting. They become very close friends. Bun-hie, who was hoping to make Eun-swi an upstanding citizen is furious that he now spends all of his time Deok-bo. She decides to murder her former admirer-turned-rival.
