In a French nightclub, choreographed song and dance routines are performed, rather than a streamlined narrative. They tell the story of Parisian culture and politics from the 1920s—1980s. A disparate, anachronistic series of characters, including an ordinary waiter, a Nazi collaborator, resistance fighters, and 1960s student protestors gather to celebrate and satirize 20th century France's icons, demons, and social changes.

Charles Renard, a police officer who has lost his hearing following an ear injury during an operation, is entrusted upon his return to work with the investigation of credit card thefts committed by a woman who uses newspaper classified ads to lure her prey.

Lucie Audibert, a student of Art History, does research work on Watteau and is certain that a hidden sense that nobody has ever deciphered can be found in a few of his paintings. The further she explores this the more Professor Jean Dussart - for unclear reasons - tries to discourage her.
