Among normal humans live the "Others" possessing various supernatural powers. They are divided up into the forces of light and the forces of the dark, who signed a truce several centuries ago to end a devastating battle. In modern day Moscow the dark Others actually roam the night as vampires while a "Night Watch" of light forces, among them Anton, the movie's protagonist, try to control them and limit their outrage

The film takes place near the border outpost "Red Stones". Three guys: the grandson of a herdsman, his cousin, who came on vacation from the city and the daughter of the head of the frontier post, met by chance in the Kazakh border steppes, where they spent time playing games. But when the real danger comes to replace the games, the guys proved to be real border guards.

Tolegen is foully murdered by Bekejan (the batyr, or nobleman, of the rival family), who earlier strived for the hand of Zhibek. Zhibek commits suicide after learning about the death of Tolegen.

The film takes place at the recently opened Nartas mine, part of a large mining complex. Due to many reasons, the mine is undersupplied in ore. Nariman Danaev, the young head of the mine, offers a way out of this situation. He meets with both support and resistance. Thus, behind the production problems there is a struggle of characters, views, and different attitudes. The conflict is moving into the moral sphere. A difficult situation develops in the personal life of the main character.
