In colonial French Indochina, a woman sells her daughter and four dogs in a desperate attempt to save her husband from torture when they can’t pay off the government taxes.

Thạch Sanh, a kind-hearted woodcutter, chances upon wine merchant Lý Thông. Orphaned from a young age, he gladly embraces being adopted by Lý Thông as his brother and comes to live with his family, unaware that the scheming merchant has other plans for him.

The main character in the film is a real person in history - the hero of the Vietnamese people's army, Cu Chinh Lan, set in the middle of the resistance war against the French (circa 1951) on the battlefield in North Vietnam.

Dũng, a well-accomplished leader of a platoon, is suddenly sent back to the rear to help the militia transport supplies and ammunitions to the frontlines. He reluctantly heeds his superiors’ order, and soon finds himself acquainted with Nhàn, one of the militia’s most hardworking members.

Hoài and Vận fall in love during the war against the French. Vận fought as a guerrilla and Vận ferried guerrillas across the river. When peace comes, Vietnam is divided in two across the Bến Hải River, leaving them separated.

Three ARVN special task agents infiltrate the ranks of North Vietnamese army to plant doubts and fears among Revolutionary soldiers.

The plot of the film revolves around revolutionary soldiers who come from different classes, but all share the same patriotism. They had to overcome many life-and-death challenges and enormous adversities in order to mobilise the masses to prepare for an uprising and seize power from the Japanese fascists, in a situation where the country fell into the tragedy of famine.
