In Mystery, Alaska, life revolves around the legendary Saturday hockey game at the local pond. A medical emergency aircraft crashes in the snowy Rockies. The pilot, two paramedics, a two-year-old patient, and her father all manage to survive the crash. Unfortunately, the little girl's already critical condition is rapidly worsening, her father is growing hysterical by the minute, the pilot is seriously injured, and the paramedics aren't sure if they are emotionally equipped for the crisis.

After the death of her husband, Jody and her daughter Samantha return to her home town. Sometimes she leaves Samantha with her old friend Winn. Only after an accident a doctor discovers that she has been abused - apparently by Winn! Jody reports immediately to the police and tries everything to avoid complications. But when it turns out that Winn still might win the case by some procedural tricks, she commits an act of desperation.

A serial murderer of teenage girls is loose, and working the case are a possibly corrupt detective Lou Miles a probably corrupt chief inspector Brodsky and his "favorite snitch." Dark personal histories and current politics mix to get the ambitious DA and her investigator involved.
