80-year-old Jean-Luc is set to play Don Quixote. It's the role he's been waiting for to bid farewell to the stage. Given his health concerns, the production team hires an understudy. Jean-Luc becomes convinced that the understudy is trying to take his place.

Nicole, 55, and her mother Alberte, 87, live together in a villa on the shores of Lake Geneva. Through their habits, they become trapped in codependency: Nicole seems incapable of autonomy, while Alberte is terrified at the idea of being alone. But as she grows closer to Lauren, her filmmaker niece, Nicole begins to explore the possibility of emancipation.

Early one morning, in an unspecified and seemingly far off time, a 12 year old boy, together with some friends, is searching a thick forest for objects of value. There is a lot of fog. The boy goes off by himself to another part of the wood and stands admiring an antique object he has found at the foot of a tree. His happy expression turns to one of curiosity as he is distracted by some high pitched cries which come and go intermittently.
