June 17, 1953 - the day on which workers in the former Soviet Union took a stand against their government for the first time to protest against excessive labor standards. The protests escalated into a political uprising, which was only ended by the Soviet army using tanks. 50 years later, the docudrama "The Uprising" captivatingly depicts the historical events of those days that threatened to unhinge the SED system.

They meet in Yugoslavia. Katharina, daughter of a Yugoslavian immigrant worker, has grown up in the Federal Republic of Germany. She is a confident, energetic career woman who has managed to work her way up to become a successful television journalist. She goes to visit her parent's country, to do a story about the children of immigrant workers in their home country. Although she says she doesn´t need a "home" any more, even she feels strange in her own country. Peter is a rather "untypical" sort of man: a dreamer, a thinker. He has given up his steady job as a composer for advertising films and is divorced. He goes to Jugoslavia to find something out about the past. He travels to the places where his father was stationed during the Second World War.

After many years, Detective Chief Inspector Steffen Gellhagen returns to his home town to solve the case of a missing schoolgirl. The former teacher Kortmann, who has a criminal record for rape resulting in death, very quickly becomes the investigator's target. However, the eloquent Kortmann is uncooperative and cynically dismissive during interrogation. Gellhagen is convinced that the man knows more than he is admitting. As the pressure from the media and the outraged citizens grows, the police officer has to decide how far he wants to go to get Kortmann to talk.
