The documentary 'Gijs' focusses on his career and everything he has meant for Dutch film and television from the 60's up until the late 90's. Through personal stories from his inner circle, including famous film directors Paul Verhoeven and Frans Weisz, we are given a look into the life of film of this man. With every film and project, we get to know him better: who Gijs was and what he has done for the film and his surroundings. His unique way of producing makes that he was able to accomplish so many great things. It is a personal approach of an important period in Dutch film and TV. By highlighting the life of Gijs Versluys, we find out how much he has meant for the careers of many.

It seems that misdeeds by inhabitants of the Dutch provinces make for believable stories, whether they are mysteries by Willem van de Wettering, or psychological thrillers by Simon Vestdijk, who wrote the book this film is based on. In the story, set in the 1950s, Hendrik Grond (Gijs Scholten van Aschat) has a good law practice, and a happy marriage which has produced a son. Life Is Wonderful is a feel-good movie about love and longing. Best friends Mees and Boelie are spending a beautiful spring day in Amsterdam's Vondelpark. The actor Lucas Bron performs the play King Lear by William Shakespeare for the pupils of his son Patja. After the show, Patja has already got home when he is warned that his father's house is on fire. He rushes to the fateful spot. The fire brigade has already arrived and is unable to say whether his father is still in the house. Patja desperately runs into the burning house and finds his father unconscious on the kitchen floor. But Lucas' spirit is in the theatre. In a magic train of thought, just before he dies, Lucas directs and acts, assisted by his son, high points and low from his eventful life in the theatre, but also outside. Theatre and reality become intertwined. It slowly becomes clear that Lucas still has something to tell his son.
