Orphan Tilly Brown is accepted as governess in the von Horten family, and the oldest son, Kuno, tries to woo her. When a large amount of money disappears, Tilly is blamed, although Kuno is the actual thief.

Everything is peace and quiet at the family Kemp's house in Sønderborg, but danger is lurking outside their doors.
