Vasiliy Shchelokov

Based on the novel of the same name by Mikhail Sholokhov, about the fate of people broken by the First World War, the October Revolution of 1917 and the Civil War in Russia (1917-1922), about the collapse of the foundations and ideals of the Don Cossacks of Russia at the beginning of the XX century, about the personal tragedy of the protagonist — Grigoriy Melekhov.

Once upon a time there was a king who loved to dress up so much that he spent all his money on new dresses. If they said about some kings: “The king is in council,” then they said about this: “The king is in the dressing room.” There were two rules in his kingdom: the first was to love the king, the second rule was to praise his outfits. But two cheerful wanderers decided to teach the king a lesson for his stupidity; they introduced themselves as overseas tailors, promising to sew him a dress that everyone could see, except for... fools.

The secretary of the district committee Borzov, trying to fulfill the plan, does not care about the rise of the entire economy. The second secretary of the district committee Martynov does not agree with his methods of work...

Beautifully shot in black and white, and scripted by Tarkovsky's collaborator Andrei Konchalovsky, this powerful melodrama tells the story of a young boy who undertakes the perilous journey to Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent, to earn some money for his hungry family. Filming in the periphery of the Soviet Union, in a time of relative political relaxation, director Shukhrat Abbasov actually dared to depict the poverty and famine that resulted from the Bolshevik Revolution.

The millionaire merchant Pazukhin quarrels with his son Prokofiy over the latter's attachment to the Old Believers and his second marriage to a young, poor girl. Prokofiy, eager to inherit his father's vast fortune upon his death, is distressed by this quarrel, especially since the state counselor Furnachev, who is married to Prokofiy's sister, constantly suggests to Pazukhin the idea of disinheriting Prokofiy. Upon learning this, Prokofiy, in order to secure the inheritance, shaves off his beard and puts on a frock coat, deciding to reconcile with his father.

In one of the Russian cities, where local tailors have long sold their fabrics and clothes from it on the market, there were overseas merchants who arrived on an expensive and beautiful boat. Quite quickly, they settled in the shopping aisles and began to attract customers and lure them with their goods.

Psychologists Petrov and Burtseva come from Moscow to a small town at the request of the plant director to find out the reasons for the tense situation at the enterprise and the increasing number of workers' layoffs.
