Pyotr Ivanovich, an experienced site foreman, was urged for a long time to take the position of chief engineer of the trust. They finally talked him into it. But a year later he returned to his construction site, half-jokingly insisting that a foreman is not a position, but a profession.

The film is dedicated to the working class. On the example of the fates of the main characters, their biographies and characters, it reveals such urgent problems as the attitude of a working man to labor, the conformity of his inclinations to his chosen profession. The obsession of the heroes and their complete dedication to their favorite work is the core of the script's dramaturgy. For both Nyurka and Mikhail Antonovich, the factory is their home, with which their entire lives are connected.

The plot centers on the people who began to form underground groups from the very first days of the occupation of Minsk: oil engineer Isa Kazinets, soldier Ivan Kabushkin, student journalist Vladimir Omelianuk, medical professor Yevgeny Klumov, party and Soviet worker Sergey Blagorazumov, and others. Their main weapon was their hatred of the occupiers. Soon, the underground fighters managed to establish contact with the partisans, and they began to plan joint operations.

Maria Odintsova, a young engineer, is a leader, secretary of the district committee of a small district, which is beginning to acquire important economic significance: it is decided to build a large hydroelectric power plant here. The heroine's conflict with the head of construction arises because of their different attitudes to the possibilities of using and preserving natural resources.

After several troubles Pavel mastered the port work and received a serious assignment. Meanwhile, his fiancee Nina, an architect by profession, is arriving in Siberia. However, besides Pavel, fellow students came to the station to meet her — Petunin's brother and sister, in whose house she is staying. Soon Annushka, who has long loved Pavel, arrives. From that day on, he had trouble after trouble. After a crane accident, which happened through his fault, the hero pulls himself together and does everything to regain the confidence of the brigade...

The war separated the young heroes, but could not destroy their memory of happy times of love. A few years after the victory, the hero, having seen her picture in a magazine, goes in search of his beloved.

The war was over. Like many of her female friends, Sasha Potapova was left a widow. It was hard living without a man’s shoulder to lean on, without love and affection, yet no one had ever seen her crying or despairing. For her strong character, the fellow-villagers elected her a collective farm chairwoman. The work, with its cares and worries, helped all but forget about her personal misfortune and woman’s loneliness. And then she fell in love – a bittersweet, unshared love, but happy anyway…

Nina Sazonova's heroines are inseparable from her personal fate as a man who survived the war, experienced a lot of grief and losses, and endured severe life trials. She rightfully holds a special and honorable place in the wonderful galaxy of artists of the Russian Army Theater. Her roles in the plays "Vassa", "Drummers", "Trees die standing" brought her national love. The images she created in cinema, such as Ekaterina, are also unforgettable. ("Women"), Anisya ("There's a Guy like That"), the Ivanovs' mother ("Our House") and Aunt Pasha from the TV series "Day by Day". All these are not just the roles of a talented actress, they are the fates of a whole generation of Russian women, great workers who endured the torments and hardships of war on their shoulders, lost their husbands, but did not break down, selflessly giving others all their kindness and concern.

In the winter of 1922, the Rodionovs, Vasiliy Platonovich and his nephew Kuzma, came to the remote Siberian village of Baklan, disguised as teachers sent from the district center to organize and build a school. In fact, this is an old Bolshevik and a young worker, authorized by the GPU, and their main task is to find out the whereabouts of a large and very dangerous gang, led by a former Kolchak officer, who instills fear in local residents.

Photo studio "Contemporary" in a provincial town lives with its everyday problems. The director is concerned over the failure to fulfill the planned targets, receptionist Alevtina wants to get married, and photographer Vladimir Oreshnikov dreams of becoming a professional photographer. But suddenly luck smiles on Oreshnikov. He takes 20 rubles form the worker's mutual aid fund, buys a government lottery bond and wins 10,000 rubles. Oreshnikov wants to receive the win himself, but his colleagues object to him, because the money that he spent on the bond were public, hence the win should be divided equally among all workers. It creates a controversial situation, which is successfully resolved on the very eve of the New Year, under the chiming clock...
