To his chagrin, young Marcel Pagnol and his family move back to their home in Marseille, France, far from their pastoral holiday cottage in the hills. Determined, Marcel makes the long voyage back to the cottage on foot and lands himself in trouble. One day Marcel's father discovers a shortcut to the cottage, but it requires trespassing. Despite their trepidations, Marcel and his family begin using the secret trail to reach their cottage.

Sandrine dreams of becoming a singer in Paris but for the time being she is only a salesgirl at Tati's and lives in a second rate hotel under the careful eye of Ahmed, the night watchman. One day, she meets Gérald, her brother's former boyfriend, who persuades her to move into his apartment. He soon takes control over Sandrine's life, organizing erotic rendezvous for her, taking her to her clients and waiting for her until she is through with her task.

A young provincial has come to Paris to study Chinese. From a modest background, he has to do odd jobs to survive, finding accommodation as best he can in a furnished room where he is hardly free. Not being wealthy, he has solved his travel problems by getting a tandem, which, in the streets of Paris, is rather rare. Eccentric, unpredictable but tender, Georges, known as "Guidon Futé", falls in love with one of his classmates from Langues Orientales.
