The film consists of several small episodes that take place in and around Munich.

Klaus and Carla, two young people whose personalities are as different as night and day, are hired for a week-long trial period as salespersons for Telematic International, a computer company. They must conclude ten contracts before the company hires them permanently. This proves to be more difficult than they assumed, partly because Klaus and Carla despise each other.

An all-knowing interlocutor guides us through a series of affairs in Vienna, 1900. A soldier meets an eager young lady of the evening. Later he has an affair with a young lady, who becomes a maid and does similarly with the young man of the house. The young man seduces a married woman. On and on, spinning on the gay carousel of life.

Stalingrad, 1942: just as he is complaining about the "blockheads" who are in control, a German named Herbert gets hit. Fast forward forty years after the war to Munich's Hofgarten, where in front of the patched-up ruins of the Army Museum, Herbert reappears, mistakenly believing he is still in Stalingrad, which the victorious Germans have destroyed and rebuilt in the image of Munich.

At night, a violent confrontation between a pimp and a Greek guest worker takes place on Hamburg's Reeperbahn, resulting in the latter's death. In the subsequent trial before a jury, contradictory statements make it difficult to decide whether this was an intentional act or an accident.

Once again, the hotel run by brothers Ludwig and Otto König is not fully booked. This changes when Genevieve Büglmeier, a rich sausage and meat manufacturer, turns up at the hotel and wants to book the four-poster room and the entire floor for herself. But the four-poster room has been booked for Otto and Ludwig's sister, Nane. What Nane doesn't realize is that Genevieve has arrived accompanied by Herbert Faltemeier, from whom Nane has just been divorced...

One night when seeking his estranged wife, Hoffmann goes to the youth center where she works. The police are there rounding up radicals who frequent the center - Hoffmann runs into the building and ends up being shot in the head. He awakens with brain trauma, partially paralyzed and unable to speak. The police accuse him of stabbing an officer; the radicals herald him as an innocent victim of police brutality. During his slow recovery at the hospital, Hoffmann must piece together his life and struggle to remember the events of that night.

Inspired by the real-life events of Mathias Kneißl, a marginal man, son of poor farmers from Bavaria, in the late XIX century. Mathias stole from the rich to give to the poor, becoming a hero for the rural people and a popular social rebel. He was chased by the police until his unfortunate sentence.

Delegates and workmen from China appear in a small Bavarian village to dismantle and ship to their country parts of a shut-down industrial plant. Four Bavarian labourers are supposed to assist them in their efforts, and in spite of cultural differences and language barriers this rather unusual encounter of two cultures seems to go pretty well.

A movie about little Marianne's life in a little German village 1943-1950. The peace comes in the shape of an American soldier who brings chewing gum to all the children, a soldier they call Mr. Frieden. Marianne's head is filled with fear of war and belief that the war will come back.
