The tragic story of the Karamazov family takes place in a Russian province in the late 19th century. The relations of their father and three brothers are very complicated and contradictory. One of the brothers is accused of killing his father, whom he did not commit. The brothers are unable to help him, and only a loving girl follows him to hard labour.

The film was based on the story of the same name by A. Yakovlev about the most famous pioneer of the thirties of the last century, who was inscribed in the history of the pioneers under number 1.

The young part-time student Boris Kulikov, upon arriving in the village of Kardymovka, learns that Buneev, the pier chief who lived there until his death, was his father. A former front-line soldier, who worked at his post for a quarter of a century, local commissioner Lieutenant Semyon Mitrofanovich Kovalev, going to the department in the morning, was most sad that tomorrow he would no longer have to go to service: tomorrow he would be retired. But the last day of his service ended tragically.

Gorky's play raises themes of the Russian intelligentsia's struggles and search for the meaning of life. The characters argue a lot, quarrel, tease each other, trying to change, if not their lives, then at least their outlook on it.
