A slice of life among Russian intelligentsia on the eve of WWII. A haunting reminder of Stalin's psychotic purge of 1938 and the nightmarish German siege of Leningrad.

When he refused to support power-hungry witch, the good shoemaker's boy, Jacob is transformed into a hunchbacked dwarf with overlong nose. Of their mother no longer recognized, mocked by the people of the city and driven away, Jacob runs one day a goose on the road. Together with the spring animal - in fact the king's daughter Greta enchanted - Jacob is now trying to make the transformation to reverse and put the wicked witch craft.

Once in a God-forsaken place, the heroine and her adopted daughter are forced to look for a bed for the night. Having found shelter in the building of an abandoned boarding school, she meets there close people from her past.

About the difficult and tragic time of collectivization - the de-collectivization. Two puppeteers go around the villages to earn bread and lodging... One night in the woods they are followed by an evil force in the form of a little boy, and in the morning the puppeteers meet the Communists, who are on their way to dispossess the wealthy land
