The film tells the story of those who took part in the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942, which became a turning point in the Great Patriotic War. For five months, the city resisted the Nazi offensive. Surrendering Stalingrad to the enemy would have meant losing the war, but holding on to the city seemed almost impossible.

Two old Leningrad workers, Sukhov and Solyanov, have a long-standing friendship — they worked at the same plant, lived in the neighborhood. Now Solyanov, at the insistence of his son, decides to retire. But it is not so easy to part with his native plant, which, as it turned out, still needs an old personnel officer...

Baron Karl Ludwig von Oster, the owner of a giant concern, one of the industrial magnates of Germany, convicted at the Nuremberg trials, was released by the American military administration and is now testing new weapons. The film is based on a judicial duel between a war criminal and journalist Ingrid Kuhn, the daughter of Professor Peter Kuhn, who paid with his life to prevent Auster from getting atomic weapons into his hands...

Several major robberies take place in Leningrad and the region, but the criminal leaves no trace. The Inurkollegia announces that the administrator of the boarding house "Otdykh" Balyasin unexpectedly receives a large sum of money as an inheritance, and the police decide to set a trap for the criminal, believing that he will not pass by such money. An employee of the Criminal Investigation Department arrives at the boarding house, and it soon becomes clear that the elusive criminal is one of the vacationers at the boarding house.

Shirokov, an engineer and inventor at an electromechanical plant, becomes a victim of street chaos and is hospitalized for an extended period. Upon learning of the incident, his colleagues do everything they can to ensure that Shirokov's latest invention becomes a part of his beloved plant.
