The action takes place under the Restoration, at the Château de Savigny, near Nerville, a devout and prudish little town in the Cotentin region. Doctor Torty is the doctor. He tells a story of which he is the only one to know the secret, that of a criminal couple, without any remorse. The pretty Hauteclaire Stassin, daughter of the master of arms, meets the Count of Savigny, married to the noble and languid Delphine. In 1930s Marseilles two small-time crooks decide to join forces when they meet while brawling over a woman. Antoine Rossi, a recidivist prisoner of war in Germany, manages to escape with the cowardly Fendard. Fendard does everything in his power to help him even though he is wounded, but Antoine tries to get rid of him as he boards the train to freedom.

Claude Brasseur plays a villain on the run from both the police and the mob. Good atmosphere in the Paris by Night, including deserted factory, Les Halles market and an empty theatre.
