Cold follows the intertwining lives of residents in a small border village in the Tran region during the late 20th century. The story unfolds across four episodes set in different periods: three winter stories following a group of villagers who meet at their local pub, and a final spring chapter. Spanning 1968 to 2000, the film traces the gradual depopulation of the village, culminating in its total abandonment.

As the son of two inmates Hyacinth was always more at home in prison than in the outside world, until he took part in a foot race that promised to change his life.

Walter is an unpleasant man, dirty, a small-time middleman, a third class swindler. He lives in an old station wagon full of dirt and scraps of a lifetime. In that car, Walter eats, sleeps, receives young customers to whom he promises to break into the show business, as long as they are willing to do anything and in exchange for a bribe. His bodyguard is always by his side, he's too old and smells. He's own faithful life companion: A Rottweiler named Blackie and he's dying.

A young nun's encounter with the underworld of child labor in Sumba restores her sense of purpose in life.
