Rezaire investigates the mechanisms of cultural appropriation that have stripped twerking of its African origins and culture. As a former ritual of fertility, twerking is strongly tied to the black female body. Assimilated and disseminated as a mainstream phenomena and commodity fetish, it has been decontextualised from issues of race, gender, privilege and ownership. Racist double standards are exposed as the practice of twerking, considered “ghetto” and over-sexualised in the context of black culture, becomes fashionable and trendy once adopted and assimilated – upholding and reinforcing myths about black female sexuality.

Peaceful Warrior encourages people of colour to get in touch with their history, their ancestors’ knowledge and traditional philosophical wisdom. In a journey of spiritual healing we see a transformation from the ‘fierce’ to the ‘peaceful’ warrior. All this takes place in a hypnotic landscape of ancient Egyptian cosmology, wombs and floating vegetables, with Tabita Rezaire practising kemetic yoga, twerking with wild hip movements to release the power of her womb, and propagating a ‘decolonial diet’ as a way of healing the trauma of (colonial) memory. Peaceful Warrior is a self-help kit for radical self-love and balancing body and mind to wage a more efficient spiritual struggle.

Drawing inspiration from the megalithic landscapes of Senegal and the Gambia, space debris, archaeology, astronomy, numerology, theology and African understandings of the cosmos, Mamelles Ancestrales strives to establish pathways between heaven and earth, between the living and the dead, in a world where celestial bodies, mineral life and spirits sing together. The film is the result of Tabita Rezaire's research and expeditions to four megalithic sites. Gathering stories from the guardians of the sites, local populations and other understandings from astronomers, archeologists, and theologians to unfold the mysteries of the thousands of stone circles scattered across Senegambia, Mamelles Ancestrales goes in pursuit of an ancient African megalithic civilization so as to better understand our own.

In Sorry for Real ‘the Western world’ apologises for the violent history of slavery, colonialism and the continuing exploitation of African people and resources. We see a smartphone chat in which ‘the West’ asks for forgiveness. But what purpose does an apology serve? Who benefits from it? Which power structures are concealed behind it? Should the present apologise for the past? And can this past ever really be forgiven? Sorry for Real questions the unequal balance of power within the politics of compensation, and emphasises the need to decolonise technologies and reconciliation strategies.
