A rich man who is very greedy for money owns a cabaret and always humiliates his loyal servant until he finds out that his servant has inherited a large fortune.

Haji Jabbar is a wealthy man, who is chided constantly by his family for avarice. Haji intends to marry off his daughter, Parvin, to a wealthy old man. He has no regard for the love existing between Parvin and her cousin. He does not care for his son, Hamid, who, due to negligence, is on the verge of a breakdown. In an elaborate fantasy sequence which makes up the last third of the film, Haji finds himself in hell, witness to all sorts of macabre and elaborate tortures and horrors. The film is noted for its elaborate set pieces which recall Méliès. There is even a sequence involving Hitler in hell!

With the arrival of a new teacher, Mr. Mortezaei-Nasab, who has a political background, at a school in a lower-town neighborhood that other teachers consider a place of exile, things begin to change. Seeing the people's financial situation and the ignorance and poverty dominating them, he sets out to help the people, including his students.

Suffering from psychological problems as a consequence of being mistreated by his father, a young man inadvertently commits a murder. His mother puts all her efforts to have him exonerated.
