A recluse living in the Channel Islands develops an obsession with the ward of wealthy steam engine enterpreneur Mess Lethierry, his niece Deruchette, in the 1820s.

Ordinary resort life is going on in the Georgian seaside town. But something new is already in the air - the 90s are on the threshold.

The film comprises three cinematic novellas: (1) “And They Arrived at the Peasant’s Hut… or the Adventures of Writer Senya in Search of the Hidden Word,” in which writer Senya draws inspiration for his rural novels from his housekeeper Yermolayevna’s tales; (2) “The Song, or How the Great Louarsab Organized a Choir,” where a city visitor attempts to form a choir of centenarian elders in a Georgian mountain village; (3) “What Is Our Life?! or What Is Our Life?!”—during a musical reenactment of pre-Revolutionary France, a drunken actor’s tardiness forces King Louis XIV (also the theater committee chairman) and the cast to improvise the play’s ending.

A young man, who avoided military service thanks to his caring parents, is enjoying his student life. Suddenly, his closest friend, who has returned from the army, dies heroically. The young man feels a twinge of conscience and begins to reevaluate his life.

In the southern region of Georgia, in ancient Meskheti, a young man, Giorgi Toreli, is appointed as the secretary of the Raikom. He aims at the revival of his native region and for this he begins to fight against bureaucracy, autocracy, corruption, prevailing inertia.

In the pre-war years in Sukhumi, Chik lived in the family of his aunt - a playful, but smart and kind boy. His days are filled with chores, studies, walks with friends, and, sometimes, skirmishes with the guys in the neighboring yard. From the attentive gaze of the boy, adult problems do not hide. Sensitive Chick suffers involuntarily when he sees injustice and cruelty.
