Yohei Yamakado has not returned to his native Japan for eight years; his friend Olivier Cheval therefore embarks on an exploration of the land of the Rising Sun, evoking his friend’s memories, almost in a re-enactement of his friend’s life by proxy. Cheval travels, moving from Tokyo to Kyoto, from Kobe to Lake Towada, and in the meantime he juggles, in an equally exploratory way, between childhood and memory, between exile and friendship, making the invisible tangible.

In 1786, Goethe goes to Italy, to accomplish a childhood fancy. But how can he see the beauty of his Arcadia? There, everything is too ardent for the eyes, starting with Vesuvius which is erupting, and this mysterious Englishwoman famous for her “Attitudes,” a show inspired by antique sculpture.

During his trip to Italy, Goethe visited the botanical gardens of the cities where he stayed. He fantasized about discovering the existence of the primitive plant: the mold where all the others, despite their difference in shape, would have formed. During the shooting of a film adapted from this trip, I went twice to the Botanical Garden of Naples. Both times the filmstrip was visited by a ghost. I saw there the ghost of this primitive plant, but also the memory of the very beginning of the photographic recording, these photogenic drawings of plants invented by Henry Fox Talbot.

In a long travelling shot, a female avatar is accompanied through the virtual museum of violence.
