Nikos Kanakis

An allegorical film about the existence or nonexistence of Man. Confronted with the need and will of Man to live, a question is raised: Does the instinct of survival finally lead us to survival or does it inevitably lead us to our complete destruction? Is conflict unavoidable? Is the need for alliance and for a meeting of minds an illusion? And who will prevail in the end? Human nature or Nature?

A writer, locked in his house, writes about a young man who wanders in Athens and tries its fruits.

Haris, a salesman, is driving back from a provincial town to Athens. A detour on the highway takes him off course and he gets lost on deserted country roads. From Athens, his wife, daughter, friends, and boss bombard him with phone calls, as they all want something from him. Time passes and Haris cannot find his way back. The situation soon spirals out of control.

A new teacher comes by transfer to an elementary school in Athens. He will distinguish a student which can't read, write or do arithmetic, and will help to discover some other talents he has, and will give him an incentive to try to learn.

On the island of Fourni in Ikaria, a researcher observes the lives of the inhabitants. Without a predetermined script, without ready-made questions, as a simple observer. Through this research, the society of Fourni comes to life before our eyes through its people, through memories, through anxieties, through daily toil. On the island, the men are sailors and the women have taken on all the jobs that one would more conventionally expect men to perform, from construction work to farm work. The camera of Alinda Dimitriou and Nikos Kanakis thus vividly records the relations between the two sexes and how the division of labor is a key cog in the functioning of the social machine.

Makis and Litsa, a couple in their forties, pressured by financial difficulties and midlife problems, see the possibility of inheriting from their aunt as a way out of their troubles. But Litsa's sister and her husband, as well as their aunt's lawyer and his friend, an engineer, have their own plans. The bequest of part of the inheritance to charities forces them all to take a trip to their late uncle's birthplace. An unexpected event, however, upsets their plans, giving the whole affair uncontrollable dimensions.
