A young man Danesh learns of ancient relics, including a ruby that once a year can help find treasure in the Canyon of Scorpio. As the old man holding the knowledge passes away, Danesh receives the ruby and a map, setting out for an adventure full of mystery and danger, friend and foe, set under the dazzling southern sun.

The heroes of the film are students of a pedagogical university, those who, after a year or two, have to carry knowledge to schoolchildren, "to sow the rational, good, eternal." In the meantime, student practice. True, the practice is not quite ordinary, because for the first time students leave far from the walls of their own university, for the first time they meet with students in the classroom not in the presence of their teachers, those with whom life encounters them daily at the institute, but with those who have been working for more than a year at school.

Russian and American Navy are working together in a sea rescue operation, trying to prevent a major ecological catastrophe. The disaster may be caused by the nuclear reactor, that was smuggled out of Russia and then dropped into the Pacific Ocean from exploded cargo airplane.

In July 1942, in the Second World War, the rearguard of the Russian army protects the bridgehead of the Don River against the German army while the retreating Russian troops cross the bridge. While they move back to the Russian territory through the countryside, the soldiers show their companionship, sentiments, fears and heroism to defend their motherland.

A top American spy is in charge of a delicate mission. The USA plans to infiltrate several U-boats in the sea of Vladivostok, however they need the soviet surveillance satellite to stay 'blind' for a couple of hours, so this spy is sent to damage the antenna for the satellite. Everything was planned accurately. But the CIA never counted on the relentless pursuit of a frontier guard who sees the spy's parachute on landing.

While looking into a burglary, Victor comes across an 11-year-old boy who ran away from an orphanage. However, the hero does not take drastic measures, but gets to know the children better and does everything possible to restore hope and faith in a better life to these disadvantaged children. "When a child becomes an orphan after losing his parents, it is terrible, but understandable. But an orphan with living parents is both terrible and incomprehensible. The hero of our film confronts the tragedy of such children, who were given life but deprived of a home, maternal affection, and warmth," said director Igor Voznesensky about his film.

The social ferment in late 19th century Russia which led to the 1917 Russian Revolution is movingly portrayed in this lengthy historical drama, which is very faithful to the 1907 novel The Mother by the celebrated Marxist writer Maxim Gorky (1868-1936). In the story, "the mother" has no other recourse than to watch her decent, kindly husband turn into an animalistic, drunken brute as a result of working in the inhuman conditions of a steel mill in the town of Sormovo. When he begins to express his suppressed rage by beating her, she is defended by her teenaged son Pavel. After his father's death, Pavel is forced to go to work in the same factory. However, Pavel and his friends begin investigating Marxism and socialist thought, and work to organize their fellow workers.
