Two young directors adapted the short stories of two Russian authors whose works had been banned for decades, and so their film ended up in the censor’s vault as well – for twenty years. Both tales look back to the post-revolutionary era: 'Angel' (Olesha) speaks tragically of the brutality and destruction of the time, and 'The Homeland of Electricity' (Platonov) captures its haunting grotesquery.

Autumn 1941. In a Nazi POW camp near Kyiev, a person claiming to be a doctor appears. He convinced Germans to set up a hospital. Raising no suspicions in Germans, he supplied prisoners with weapons and helped them to escape.

The film is about the hot war summer of 1944. A group of several gun crews defends a tiny bridgehead on the right bank of the Dniester. The fates of the main characters: the front-line soldier-battalion commander Babin, the young lieutenant Motovilov, the nurse Rita Tamashova and the rank-and-file gunners, soldiers, among whom are brave people, faint-hearted and scoundrels, unnoticed heroes, are shown in a setting of several hours of peaceful life before another violent attack of the enemy, after which not everyone will survive...

Having entered the institute, the hero of the film, along with his new comrades, goes to the village "for potatoes". A month spent in the "open air" not only fills the life of a spoiled urban youth with interesting acquaintances and impressions, but also gives him his first love.

She tells him that a bunch of people from the neighboring town are going to kill him for raping a woman. The guy tells the girl about himself: he's a vagrant because he's bored living in one place. He's very lonely. But the girl is essentially just as lonely. This brings the young people together and creates sympathy between them. The boy sends the girl away for a revolver, but when she leaves, the armed husband of the allegedly raped woman appears. The guy explains to him how it happened: the woman called him herself, but when he didn't give her money, she made a fuss. The husband believes the guy, but out of cowardice in front of his friends shoots and kills him.
