1964 in Berlin, not long after the raise of the wall that separated the city: ex-prisoner Bruno is chosen by the eastern secret agency to be sent west with a special order. Die Ausgesperrten revolves around an unlikely group of 4 youths in Vienna who band together, each for different reasons, to mug people. Two are fraternal twins, the third a blue-collar worker, the fourth the privileged daughter of wealthy parents who "needs a little dirt in her life". The story provides penetrating insights into the Austria of the 50s, in which some enjoyed the benefits of the "Economic Miracle", while others were shut out. It repeatedly references Austria's Nazi past and the numerous ways in which it influences the present despite the conspiracy of silence which surrounds it.

A poetic attempt to show the state of mind of people critical of the regime in Prague who vacillate between their love of their homeland and their desire to emigrate, illustrated by the example of a philosophy professor who has to work as a gravedigger and luggage transporter at the airport.

A little man wants to order a warm coat from a fabric he has brought with him to a tailor's workshop in winter. He is laughed at and told that orders for this type of garment are only accepted in the summer - after all, they work to a schedule. When the customer continues to insist on his request, he is declared insane by the employees of the atelier - they are not a capitalist company after all. This infuriates him so much that a neurologist, the fire department and an ambulance are called. The doctor clarifies the situation and advises the first tailor to have a word with his assistant. "I'm normal," he claims. "I believe it," replies the doctor, "but will the others believe it...?"

The writer Franz Schmidt reads to two editors from his new romance novel. The two criticize the lack of a problematic portrayal of the joyful life of youth, the role of women and the collective "welding together". He is asked to revise the work again. In his new version, the writer presents - in a staged setting - a pair of lovers who want to start a life together in front of smoking chimneys with a piece of steel from the new production. But even this does not satisfy the two art experts. A couple are kissing in front of the window. They point to it and recommend another revision. Outraged, Mr. Schmidt tells them he is going to write a story about real-life art experts and leaves. Their photo disappears into a folder labeled "superfluous contemporaries".

The wealthy industrialist Ernst Schmitt has to take a step back for health reasons. But first he wants to arrange his succession, as he doesn't trust the manager of his chocolate factory. Without further ado, he pretends that his chauffeur is his millionaire boss and that he is his own driver. This allows him to uncover the factory manager's machinations unobserved...

A schizophrenic patient is is wasting away in a mental institution, until a young doctor encourages him to write poetry. The resulting masterpieces are however not able to stop the man from suicide.
