The heroes of the film are students of a pedagogical university, those who, after a year or two, have to carry knowledge to schoolchildren, "to sow the rational, good, eternal." In the meantime, student practice. True, the practice is not quite ordinary, because for the first time students leave far from the walls of their own university, for the first time they meet with students in the classroom not in the presence of their teachers, those with whom life encounters them daily at the institute, but with those who have been working for more than a year at school.

The story takes place in an institution called the "Experimental Base for New Management Techniques." Rumors of an impending staff reduction have stirred up the entire organization. Some are trying to use the situation to advance their careers, while others are still carrying out their duties without questioning the purpose of their "work." However, one employee, Savkin, openly challenges the routine and complacency, suggesting that the base should be dismantled and that everyone should find a job where they can truly contribute.

The class teacher invited fathers about whom the children wrote essays to a parent meeting. This is how everyone found out what their son or daughter thought about him. This gave rise to an interesting and serious conversation.
