The suicidal gambler Tom Haget receives an invitation to The Club of the Living Dead, whose members apparently see it as their task to help each other to "end this empty earthly existence" according to a lottery system. At the same time, an acquaintance of Tom Haget, Lieutenant Dick Huntley, receives an assignment from his superiors to go to a distant destination with a large sum of money. However, Huntley is hit by a car, unconscious and without ID documents he ends up in a hospital, is reported missing, and it is widely suspected that he ran away with the money. Laban Lundström is the porter at Hotell Kåkbrinken. The hotel is threatened by wholesaler Sjökvist, who wants to pull down the house and build a new and modern house instead.

An out-of-work musician is desperate for work and when his best friend sees an add requesting a cellist he signs him up. However, the work is for a female, so he creates the character Märta Letterström and joins the trio at a small-town hotel. But being a woman is not as easy as you think.
