Bacurau, a small town in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants notice that their community has vanished from most maps.

When the Netuno Circus returns to Fernando de Noronha, it brings back a young man with a turbulent past. Pedro is now Zolah, the human cannonball. When secrets surface, bizarre family reunions rival the circus performances.

Account an important part of the history of Brazil, through its main character, Anayde Beiriz a poet, journalist and revolutionary and libertarian teacher of the early twentieth century, known for its sexual liberalism, which shocked the pre-Revolution in the state of Paraíba during 1930. His love for João Dantas eventually forge João Pessoa's death, at that time, governor of of Paraíba. These events served as a trigger for the a revolution.

In tropical Recife, in northeastern Brazil, temperatures drop to impossible lows and the inhabitants have to adapt. This 'mockumentary' gradually turns critical, looking at the climate, urban development and social interaction from every angle. Does a ray of sun pierce the clouds, after all?
