This colourful, music-filled and sensual melodrama based on early stories by Maxim Gorky tells the fatal love story between the beautiful and rebellious girl Rada and the handsome horse thief Zobar. The story is set in early 20th century Bessarabia, now part of Moldova, then belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The story is about two old men. One day they are invited to a friend’s wedding. On the wedding day, not knowing what present to give, they randomly decide to take the sofa from the courtyard. They steal a car, get the sofa on the top and hit the road. Little do they know, about the troubles this sofa would cause them.

Mikhail is fascinated by the ideas of the Decembrists about a Russia free from the tyranny of the Tsar. After graduating from military school, he goes abroad. Upon returning to Russia, a tragic life awaits him.

One can achieve a free life only in an irreconcilable struggle against the class enemy. With this slogan, after being wounded, Mikhail returns from the civil war to one of the Moldovan villages, creates a Council of the Poor and makes the first decision — to plow the landlords' lands...
