On a train's way to the Italian Alps, the jewelry of a wealthy young widow is stolen and a military veteran working as a waiter is the first to come under suspicion.

That he got away with his life at all is due to the quick action of the circus director's daughter, Tamara, who shoots the tiger. During the Napoleonic occupation of the German states in 1812, a tailor by the name of Anton Wibbel is sentenced to sit in jail for insulting the Emperor. The tailor manages to get out of this by paying off a friend to go to prison in his place. But then, the "phony" prisoner suddenly dies in his cell and everyone now thinks Wibbel is dead.

It can hardly be said that things are peaceful in the Berlin apartment building where the film's story takes place. There are constant clashes between the residents – and sometimes that's quite literal: for example, when the widow Bock hid some explosives among the bricks, which detonated when the building's thieving doorman lit them in his stove.

Sabine Senden is desperate – she's hopelessly in love with Willi Ulbrich, her mother's lodger. The only problem is, her mother doesn't like the man at all. She even wants to sue him for defamation, since he allegedly called her a "hooded crow" after he and his friends partied all night and kept her awake. Without telling her mother anything, Sabine and Willi secretly marry before the lengthy legal proceedings are even over. Of course, Sabine can't possibly introduce her husband to her mother; so she simply presents Erich, her friend Ulla's fiancé, as her husband.

Musician Eduard Boeckel wants to settle down and marries laundry owner Lisbeth Timm. He brings his friend August Garfs into the marriage, and the housekeeper Alwine quickly sets her sights on him. In his new position, Boeckel invents a laundry detergent with unfortunately disastrous consequences: the laundry becomes brittle, and the first major marital spat ensues. Eduard flees to his fellow musicians, gets drunk, and seeks solace with Alwine. When she drives him away, he returns contritely to his wife, who forgives him. And now she also knows what is truly wrong with their marriage: her Eduard misses his profession. From now on, he makes music, and she does the laundry.
