When Italian Vincenzo comes to Norway to open a restaurant, Norwegian drinking habits and alcohol politics are seen with southern European eyes. Vincenzo dies trying, and his brother seeks revenge.

A group of very different men are summoned for their refresher training at Haglemoen military camp. One more strange than the other, we get to meet jovial salesman Goggen Rask, car mechanic Bottolph Johansen, nicknamed daydreamer, and ship-owner Rieber Larsen Jr. They form an unruly faction which Major Kampstrup struggles to maintain structured and prepared, not to mention keeping them inside the camp premises before they pretend sick to see the nurses Bitten and Florence. The men do their best to get through their rigourous training, with great confusion and comical situations.

The aging and divorced writer Johannes Mørk relives intoxicating infatuation of his youth when his teenage daughter Eva, along with two young girlfriends, sweeps into his lazy southern home. Mørk has long revolved around his own problems with feelings of guilt for the failed marriage. Lone, one of his daughter's friends, makes a strong impression on him, and soon something will begin to develop between them. This awakening leads him to resume his relationship with his ex-wife. This especially affects his daughter Eva, who has been afraid to commit because she is a child of divorced parents.

Vikings attack Kuksja's village, and end up bringing him along on their ship because they believe he is good luck. After proving himself in a battle against the dreaded Danes, chief Torir bestows upon him the name of Einar and takes him in as his son. Back home in Norway the men are received as heros, but new trouble arises when Kuksja falls in love with the beautiful Signy, who is already betroth to the vicious Sigurd.

In the autumn of 1944, contrary to the order of the Nazi command to evacuate to the south, residents of the Norwegian town of Kirkenes took refuge in an abandoned mine. The command of the Soviet Army became aware of the intentions of the Nazis to blow up the old tunnels of the city, but the Soviet soldiers managed to prevent the tragedy.

Many other characters cross their path as strange situations arise in Oslo's colorful underworld, where life still flourishes beneath the asphalt.

Thor's father drinks, and Thor escapes to the woods and refuses to come home before he quits drinking. Lucky for Thor he has a lot of friends who help him.
