Emma is told she has cancer and two months to live and must clean up her life before she dies, to prevent the children from falling into the hands of her abusive ex-husband.

Svein's best friend is a fancy rat named Halvorsen who goes missing during a pet contest, leading to chaos with newspapers reporting a rat invasion. To avoid losing both Halvorsen and the competition, Svein must work to keep his parents unaware of the situation.

Preben Bang visits the Borkmann family and invites Mrs. Lissen to the opera. Her husband Fredrik says he wants to stay home. The Borkmann family is also visited by their friends Einar and Topsy Lorck Mathiesen. And while Preben takes Lissen and Einar to the opera, Topsy and Fredrik are left alone in the apartment.
