Heinrich Lohse, a strict and highly efficient purchasing manager at a company bulk-orders 40 tons of mustard and enough typewriting paper for 40 years just to get discount. Heinrich's boss decides it’s time for him to retire early. Heinrich suddenly finds himself with nothing to do—except micromanage his household, much to the dismay of his wife Renate and their son Dieter

Even on Christmas Eve, Heinz Becker's wife Hilde and son Stefan are not granted any peace and quiet, as their head of the family with the Batschkapp and the eternally chattering mouth turns the celebration of love into a less than contemplative horror trip for the whole family. Even the question of whether sausages should be served hot or cold with the potato salad leads to disputes under the Christmas tree - which Heinz can only force into balance with brute force. When the Christmas tree figure remains untraceable, the oven develops volcanic heat and mother Hilde completes the chaos with her unconditional desire for harmony, Heinz is proven right once again when he says: "Christmas is a matter of nerves".

Next to the home of Heinz and Hilde Becker is the villa of the company boss Dr. Bernhard Schenkberg and his wife, who he called "Püppchen". While Schenkberg always politely strives for a good neighborly relationship, his elegant, arrogant wife looks down contemptuously on the grumpy, constantly do-it-yourself Heinz and the conservative, naive housewife Hilde.
