When his father dies, Chandran is forced to go abroad to earn money to pay his father's dues. On a holiday to India, he meets his childhood lover and hopes to rekindle the relationship.

The show follows Rohini, a young woman who faces social prejudice and discrimination over her complexion. The title Kanmashi (the Malayalam word for kajal or eyeline) acts as a metaphor for inner character and emotions that go beyond physical appearances. The narrative combines family drama and romance with unexpected mystery and supernatural elements.
