She was the first to study gorillas in their natural environment: the high mountains of Rwanda, where she settled in 1967. For nearly twenty years, Dian Fossey lived with the gorillas, observed their behavior, and changed the way people viewed them. Her relentless fight against poaching prevented the species from becoming extinct. But in December 1985, the primatologist was murdered, and the mystery surrounding her death remains unsolved. Former colleagues, scientists, and biographers shed light on the impact of her work, but also on the darker sides of her personality and her uncompromising commitment.

Many people have Route 66 on their bucket list: To ride it once, from Chicago to Los Angeles, on a Harley. Or in an old American road cruiser. And experience what we know from the movies: the endless expanse of the plains, the endless deserts with their shimmering red mesas, the small-town USA. Even after 100 years, Route 66 stands for freedom and adventure, the promise of happiness in the USA. But it also stands for the many people who live along Route 66 but are not part of its history. And thus for the USA itself and its contradictions.

The second episode is a journey of discovery through the southern Irish Midlands. This is where the heart of Ireland beats. Largely unknown, this region reveals worlds of scenic beauty, tradition, and Irish cheerfulness—despite the decidedly changeable weather.

The extraordinary story of Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940), creator of Nils Holgersson, a memorable and legendary literary character, and the first female storyteller to win the Nobel Prize for Literature (1909); a woman as pioneering in her life as in her remarkable work.

The story of a powerful political and economic dynasty, fundamental to understanding the turbulent destiny of the United States of America throughout the 20th century; of nine brothers who had truly extraordinary lives, marked by both greatness and tragedy: the story of the Kennedy family.
