Lide works the night shift for the construction company in charge of a new high-speed train network, a project that has attracted protests and violent attacks. One morning she wakes up to discover that her teenage daughter, Ane, is nowhere to be found.

Andrés, a music teacher diagnosed with cancer, seeks treatment at a hospital in the city. His travels there on a singular, dilapidated bus accompanied by other cancer patients. It soon becomes an extraordinary experience, giving him new friends and a far more joyous understanding of life. He also learns to conquer his fears, such as the stage fright which has frustrated a budding career as a musician.

In a village in the Sierra de Madrid, a couple feels that their children, who have since moved out, have forgotten about them. To get them back, they will pretend that they have won the lottery and that they are multimillionaires.

A trigger-happy Nationalist fears retribution from the son of a man he executed. To mollify the boy's anger, he takes a drastic step: he keeps constant watch over the fig tree the boy has planted at his father's gravesite. As the years pass, the man's lonely vigil makes him a tourist attraction, much to the chagrin of his former colleagues.
