A coming of age story about a group of millennials who start to face their self-destructive tendencies as they each head straight into their crisis of thirtysomethings.

The 20th century dreamt of utopia but instead experienced tragedies. This film looks at San Francisco-based Latvian artist and playwright Raimonds Staprāns’ nearly century-long experience of trying to define life and statehood. It constructs an exact replica of one of his paintings, and asks actors to portray characters from his plays. Keeping in mind the symbolically charged image of the red barn in the painting, it deliberately incites arguments between the actors, the director and the crew about the motivations of the characters as well as alternative actions or decisions that they could have taken but did not.

Self-proclaimed cryptocurrency expert Fatso is a middle-aged curmudgeon frittering away his days with video games and conspiracy theory videos. A true story of a 17 going on 18 year-old boy called Modris. He’s a guy who goes to school, has a girlfriend and some good friends. He has a small gambling addiction, which makes his relationship with his mother difficult. It’s also hard because the two of them live alone and the mother doesn’t miss a chance to remind him that his father is in prison and that Modris has a bad gene. Their relationship boils over when, in the middle of a Nordic winter, Modris pawns his mother’s electric heater in trying to squeeze a win from a slot machine. She betrays him to the police and Modris is sentenced to two years’ probation. That is when his adventures with the Latvian justice system begin and he sets a new goal: to find the father he has never met.

Katya (20) travels from a small town in Russia to Riga to attend a concert by a famous dancer she has dreamt of seeing since she was a child, as she is passionate about dancing herself. When she arrives in the Latvian capital, she is thrown into a whirlwind of troubles and problems: controllers and fines for travelling on an international train without a ticket in the companion's room; language and nationality problems; ending up in an apartment where Katya is harassed by strange men; fortunately, after a failed attempt at rape, the girl manages to escape from the apartment, but Katya's belongings and documents are left behind. Katya is left alone in a strange city with no papers, no money, no friends and no knowledge of the language. In this desperate situation, she is helped by an unusual Latvian young man, Ivars, and a penchant for dancing, which makes this reality less bleak in Katja's eyes and helps her to immerse herself in an idealised fantasy world.
