Uttam Mohanty

Born 1958-12-23 · Baripada, Odisha

Uttam Mohanty (April 29, 1955 to February 27, 2025) was a legendary Indian film and television actor who dominated the Odia film industry, known as Ollywood, for three decades. Often hailed as a one-man industry, he amassed a prolific filmography of over 135 Odia films, alongside 30 Bengali films and the Hindi film Naya Zaher. Renowned for his effortless naturalism and urbane charisma, Mohanty broke away from the traditional Odia screen hero archetype, leaving an indelible mark on regional cinema. Born and raised in Baripada, Odisha, Mohanty exhibited a strong passion for acting and sports during his youth. After completing his education in science at Maharaja Purnachandra College, he briefly pursued chartered accountancy in Ludhiana and Kolkata. However, his cinematic aspirations drew him back to Baripada when he learned of a local film production. Director Sadhu Meher cast him in the 1977 film Abhiman, which became a box office hit and formally launched Mohanty's acting career. Following his debut, Mohanty rapidly established himself as a leading romantic star in Ollywood with successes like Pati Patni, Nijhum Ratira Sathi, and Ram Balram. The 1980s marked the zenith of his career, a period during which he became the ubiquitous face of Odia cinema. He formed highly successful on-screen pairings with prominent leading ladies, including Mahasweta Ray and his future wife, Aparajita Mohanty. Critics and peers widely credit his immense popularity and rustic appeal for single-handedly sustaining the Odia film industry during periods of severe financial distress in the early 1990s. As he transitioned into the later stages of his career, Mohanty gracefully embraced character roles in films such as Jashoda and Subhadra, while also making a significant impact on television in popular serials like Sara Akash and Uttaradayi. His exceptional contributions earned him numerous accolades, including multiple Orissa State Film Awards for Best Actor, the prestigious Jayadeb Puraskar in 1999, and the Odisha Living Legend Award in 2012. Mohanty passed away in New Delhi on February 27, 2025, at the age of 66, leaving behind a monumental legacy carried forward by his son, current leading Ollywood actor Babushan Mohanty.
