When a heavily traumatised girl of African origin is found wandering around the polders of the border region between Flanders and the Netherlands, Tara, a Dutch police inspector from Rotterdam, and Bert, a psychiatrist from Antwerp, begin to investigate.

Tropenjaren is a comedy about the whirlwind of new parenthood and a former life that’s gone for good. When Jelle and his wife Rosa welcome their first child, a new chapter unfolds. The young parents strive to do their best for their daughter Stella while also trying to keep their work lives and relationship as lively and ambitious as ever. Nights out and parties, however, quickly give way to diapers and babysitters. In short, the couple is gearing up for the tropenjaren—the intense early years of parenting.

One night an unusually powerful solar storm hits the Netherlands, the paths of ambulance driver Alima and pretend student Bobbie cross. Under pressure from their failed attempts, the young women seek a way to achieve a happy ending.

The 12-year-old black girl Ella is deprived of safety, opportunities, and freedom. Ella discovers that she has lived multiple lives in Ghana, Curaçao and Surinam as the immortal, extraterrestrial Xoxo. In this magical realistic feature with elements of science fiction, a paralleled world is created from where the aliens observe human thoughts and feelings.
